The Federal Government has begun training and empowering smallholder farmers in Abia State in cassava value chain production.

The training, which included women and youths from Omoba in the state’s Isialangwa North Local GoveThe training, which included women and youths from Omoba in the state’s Isialangwa North Local Government Area, was held at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s (FMARD) National Soil Laboratory in Umuahia.

Cassava farmers were taught best practices for growing good cassava crops, including good site selection, proper land preparation, selecting desirable/improved varieties, healthy cassava stem selection, and high-yielding resistant varieties, among other things.

According to Victor Ihediwa, director of FMARD in Abia State, the Federal Government is working hard to achieve food and nutrition security through a combination of policies and appropriate agricultural technologies that will lead to job and wealth creation, as well as an improvement in living standards.
